Laguzelle is a vibrant and refreshing red wine crafted by Benjamin Taillandier, a talented winemaker based in the Minervois appellation of Languedoc-Roussillon, France. This cuvée is a blend primarily composed of Cinsault, with smaller portions of Syrah and Carignan, sourced from biodynamically farmed vines averaging around 30 to 54 years old. The grapes are grown on diverse soils including schist, clay, limestone, sand, and marl, which contribute to the wine’s lively character and distinct minerality.
Taillandier’s approach emphasizes minimal intervention and a commitment to expressing the terroir of Minervois in a fresh, approachable style. The Laguzelle undergoes a short maceration period—sometimes just a few days—followed by spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel or cement tanks. After aging for about six months in these vessels, the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with only a minimal addition of sulfur (typically around 10-20 mg/L), preserving its natural vibrancy.
On the nose, Laguzelle offers an inviting bouquet of black fruits like red plum and blackberry, accented by hints of dried herbs, warm spices, and a touch of black pepper. The palate is light to medium-bodied, with bright acidity and silky tannins, delivering a juicy, fruit-forward profile that’s both savory and refreshing. Unlike the often concentrated and heavy wines of the region, Laguzelle stands out for its elegance and “drinkability,” embodying Taillandier’s vision of a Minervois “vin de soif”—a thirst-quenching wine perfect for casual enjoyment.
This crowd-pleasing red shines when served slightly chilled, making it an ideal companion for warm-weather sipping, picnics, or pairing with dishes like tapas, charcuterie, grilled poultry, or roasted pork. Laguzelle is a testament to Taillandier’s skill in crafting wines that balance tradition with a modern, lively twist, redefining the potential of Minervois with every sip.
