Le Coste Rosso is a vibrant and soulful natural red wine from the Le Coste estate in Gradoli, Lazio, crafted by Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clémentine Bouveron. This wine is primarily made from Sangiovese, with smaller contributions from local varieties like Ciliegiolo and Cannaiolo, sourced from old vines grown on the mineral-rich volcanic soils surrounding Lake Bolsena. The estate’s 14 hectares are farmed organically and biodynamically, with a holistic approach that integrates vineyards with chestnut woods and olive groves, reflecting a deep respect for the land and its biodiversity.
The winemaking process for Le Coste Rosso is deliberately hands-off to let the terroir shine. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in open-top vats, often with a short maceration period—typically a few days to a couple of weeks—depending on the vintage. The wine then ages for about a year in large, neutral Slavonian oak barrels or fiberglass tanks, preserving its purity and fruit-forward character. It is bottled unfiltered, unfined, and without added sulfites, resulting in a raw, living expression of the fruit and soil.
In the glass, Le Coste Rosso reveals a bright ruby-red color with a slight haziness, typical of its natural profile. The nose offers an enticing mix of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and crushed raspberries, layered with earthy notes of damp forest floor, violets, and a faint volcanic smokiness. On the palate, it’s light- to medium-bodied with a juicy, gulpable texture, brisk acidity, and soft, fine-grained tannins that provide just enough structure. Flavors of tart red fruit mingle with hints of spice and a mineral-driven finish, making it both refreshing and complex. Clocking in at around 12-13% alcohol, it strikes a balance between drinkability and depth.
This rosso is a versatile companion to rustic Italian fare—think pizza, tomato-based pastas, or grilled meats—and shines when served slightly chilled at 14-16°C. Le Coste Rosso embodies the estate’s philosophy of crafting wines that are alive and expressive, with each bottle offering a unique glimpse into the vintage’s personality and the volcanic landscape of northern Lazio. Drink it young to capture its vibrant energy, though it can evolve intriguingly over a few years.
