"Les Iles Rouge" from Domaine Bobinet is a vibrant, natural red wine hailing from Saumur in the Loire Valley, crafted by Sébastien Bobinet and Émeline Calvez. Made from 100% Grolleau Noir, a lesser-known Loire grape, it’s sourced from organic vines averaging 30-40 years old, rooted in the region’s clay-limestone soils. Hand-harvested with meticulous care, the grapes undergo a 10-day carbonic maceration with native yeasts in fiberglass tanks, followed by a short élevage of 3-6 months in concrete or fiberglass. Bottled unfiltered with no added sulfur, it’s a pure expression of fruit and terroir.
This light-bodied red pours a brilliant ruby with a slight purple shimmer. The nose bursts with spicy blackberries, red cherries, and a touch of pepper, evoking a basket of fresh-picked berries dusted with earth. On the palate, it’s juicy and crunchy, with bright acidity, soft tannins, and a refreshing, mineral-driven finish that lingers with a hint of sauvage charm. At around 11.5-12% ABV, it’s a glou-glou delight—perfect for chilling slightly (16°C) and pairing with charcuterie, roasted vegetables, or a casual picnic spread.
Sébastien, an eighth-generation vigneron, and Émeline bring their minimalist ethos to this cuvée, letting the Grolleau shine without artifice. "Les Iles Rouge" is a testament to their skill in crafting lively, honest wines that embody the Saumur spirit—unpretentious, soulful, and irresistibly drinkable. Enjoy it young to capture its exuberant freshness.
