Artesano Pam i Pipa is a vibrant natural red wine from Artesano Vintners, a small-scale project launched in 2016 by New Zealanders Alex Craighead (of Kindeli Wines) and Mike Shepherd in Catalonia, Spain. Typically a blend of 60-70% Garnacha (Garnatxa Negra), 23-30% Cabernet Franc, and occasionally 10-17% Cariñena (Carignan), it’s crafted from organic grapes grown in the Terra Alta, Conca de Barberà, and Alt Camp regions on soils of calcified stone, clay, and sand. The vines, tended without synthetic pesticides or herbicides, reflect the duo’s commitment to sustainable farming and Catalonia’s rich viticultural heritage.
The winemaking is minimalist and intuitive: Garnacha often undergoes whole-bunch carbonic maceration for a juicy lift, while Cabernet Franc and Cariñena ferment traditionally or semi-carbonically in stainless steel with native yeasts. After blending, the wine matures for several months in steel or neutral oak, then is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites. Clocking in at 13-13.4% alcohol, Pam i Pipa—meaning “bread and pipe” in Catalan—nods to simple pleasures and rustic tradition.
In the glass, it pours a lively ruby with garnet flecks. The nose is a Mediterranean melody—red currants, boysenberry, and ripe raspberry weave through sweet spices, aromatic herbs like thyme, and a peppery twist, with a faint smoky undertone. On the palate, it’s fresh and medium-bodied, with silky tannins, a saline streak, and a juicy core of red fruit that finishes with a mineral snap. It’s both elegant and approachable, evoking the finesse of Jura reds with a Catalan soul.
Pair it with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or a lamb tagine, and serve it slightly chilled (55-60°F) to amplify its vibrancy. Produced in tiny batches (around 1,200 bottles total), Pam i Pipa is a testament to Artesano’s low-intervention ethos—unpolished, delicious, and unmistakably alive.
