Bengoetxe Getariako Txakolina is a distinctive, organic white wine from the Basque Country’s Getariako Txakolina D.O., produced by Iñaki and Rosa Maria Etxeberria at their small family winery in Olaberria, Gipuzkoa, established in 2001. Unlike most Txakolina producers located along the coast, Bengoetxe’s 3.5-hectare vineyard is situated inland on clay-rich slopes at 200 meters elevation, benefiting from a slightly warmer microclimate and better-ripened grapes. The wine is primarily made from 95% Hondarribi Zuri and 5% Gros Manseng, with some vintages including Petit Corbu, all grown organically (certified since 2007) on unplowed soils teeming with microbial life. The grapes are hand- or machine-harvested at optimal ripeness, fermented with native yeasts in 3,000-liter stainless steel vats, and aged on lees for up to a year without batonnage, resulting in a wine with more body and complexity than typical Txakolina. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal SO2, it has natural CO2, giving a subtle spritz rather than the pronounced fizz of coastal counterparts. The wine exhibits a pale yellow to golden hue with vibrant aromas of lemon, apple, stone fruit, beeswax, chamomile, and petrol, underscored by a saline, mineral-driven finish. On the palate, it’s light to medium-bodied, with racy acidity, a supple texture, and flavors of citrus zest, orchard fruit, and a smoky, flinty edge.Bengoetxe’s unique terruño and low-intervention approach yield a Txakolina that stands out for its depth and balance, reminiscent of Loire Chenin Blanc or Alsatian Riesling. It pairs excellently with Serrano ham, sheep’s cheeses, poultry, or fresh seafood like ceviche. With an ABV of 12-12.5%, it’s a versatile, refreshing wine that evolves beautifully in the bottle, reflecting the Etxeberrias’ commitment to authentic Basque winemaking.
