From the sun-scorched high plains of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain, the Gulp/Hablo Orange by Bodegas Parra Jiménez is a radiant, skin-contact white that channels the biodynamic verve of the Parra brothers—Francisco, Javier, and Luis—whose 445-acre Demeter-certified estate stands as Europe’s largest organic vineyard. Rooted in the vibrant scarplands of La Mancha, where chalky clay soils and heat-retaining pebbles in plots like Cuesta Colorá cradle ancient vines, this family operation blends traditional viticulture with a holistic ecosystem of sheep, Manchego cheese, and organic garlic fields. Launched in 2021 as part of the irreverent, liter-sized Gulp/Hablo lineup—designed for pure, gulpable joy—they collaborate with natural wine luminary Juan Antonio Ponce to craft this orange wine from hand-harvested Verdejo, La Mancha’s unsung hero. Fermented with wild yeasts on its skins for 10–14 days in stainless steel, then rested in concrete vats, this unfiltered, minimally sulfured gem (12% ABV) skips fining to deliver a raw, textured snapshot of the vintage, pulsing with the region’s arid soul.Glowing amber-gold in the glass, it unfurls a captivating nose of dried apricot, candied orange peel, and ripe peach, laced with chamomile, fennel seed, and a nutty almond-skin edge, underpinned by a flinty, saline minerality that evokes La Mancha’s chalky terroir. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with a grippy, tea-like tannic bite—think juicy tangerine and quince mingling with savory herbs, white pepper, and a hint of honeycomb, all carried by vibrant acidity and a textured, slightly funky finish that begs another sip. Best served lightly chilled (12–14°C), it’s a versatile partner for bold dishes like smoked cheeses, roasted root vegetables, spicy Moroccan tagine, or grilled octopus with citrus. Drink now through 2027 to catch its lively evolution, shared straight from its generous liter bottle with friends—this is La Mancha’s free-spirited orange crush, proving biodynamic skin-contact wines can be as approachable as they are thrillingly complex.
