"Sophia" from Cantina Giardino is a mesmerizing orange wine that encapsulates the bold, experimental spirit of Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola, founders of this revered natural winery in Ariano Irpino, Campania, Southern Italy. Crafted from 100% Greco grapes sourced from old vines—often over 50 years old—grown at 650 meters above sea level in the volcanic soils of Santa Paolina, Irpinia, this wine is a tribute to the couple’s daughter and the region’s ancient winemaking traditions. The grapes undergo an extended maceration of up to a year on their skins in small terracotta amphorae made from local clay, followed by six months of rest in acacia and chestnut barrels. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur, "Sophia" glows with a hazy amber hue, offering an aromatic tapestry of dried apricots, citrus peel, wildflowers, and chestnut honey, with whispers of minerality and spice. On the palate, it’s rich yet balanced—vibrant tannins, crisp acidity, and a long, saline finish create a textured, evolving experience. Pair it with rustic dishes like braised rabbit or seafood carbonara to unlock its full potential. A standout in Cantina Giardino’s lineup, "Sophia" is a testament to their mission of preserving indigenous varieties and letting the land speak through unadulterated, soulful wine.
