Cantina Giardino Volpe Rosa is a distinctive natural rosé wine crafted by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola at their winery in Ariano Irpino, located in the Irpinia subregion of Campania, Italy. Made from the rare, indigenous Coda di Volpe Rossa grape—a pink-skinned variety sourced from 75-year-old vines grown at 500 meters above sea level on volcanic clay-limestone soils—this wine showcases the couple’s commitment to preserving Campania’s ancient viticultural heritage. The grapes undergo a brief 1-2 day maceration on the skins, followed by spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and aging for about a year in a mix of sandstone amphorae and concrete vats, or sometimes chestnut barrels, depending on the vintage. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites, Volpe Rosa presents a striking brick-pink hue with aromas of Mediterranean herbs, ripe red berries, dried flowers, and a touch of honey. On the palate, it’s lively and rustic, with flavors of blood orange, spice, and a mineral core, balanced by vibrant acidity and faint tannins. At around 13% ABV, this expressive, territorial rosé pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, herb-marinated vegetables, or light cheeses, offering a fresh, authentic taste of Irpinia’s rugged charm.
