The "Cuvée Kermit Lynch" from Caves des Vignerons d’Estézargues is a standout Côtes du Rhône-Villages rouge, crafted in collaboration with the legendary American wine importer Kermit Lynch. Produced by the cooperative winery Les Vignerons d’Estézargues, located on the right bank of the Rhône near Avignon in southern France, this wine reflects the region’s rich terroir and the co-op’s dedication to natural winemaking. It’s sourced from 40-year-old, gobelet-trained vines on the Signargues plateau, a site characterized by alluvial soils covered with galets roulés (rounded riverbed stones), reminiscent of the nearby Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
This cuvée is a blend dominated by Grenache (typically around 56%), with Syrah (25%), Mourvèdre (10%), Carignan (7%), and a touch of Cinsault (2%), though exact proportions may vary slightly by vintage. The grapes are organically farmed, hand-harvested, and vinified with minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts occurs in concrete tanks, followed by aging for 8-12 months in concrete or neutral vessels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it receives only a minimal dose of sulfur at bottling, preserving its vibrant, unadulterated character.
In the glass, "Cuvée Kermit Lynch" pours a deep ruby with purple tinges. The nose is a captivating mix of ripe blackberry, cassis, and red cherry, woven with garrigue-inspired notes of lavender, thyme, and a hint of smoked spice. On the palate, it’s full-bodied yet lively, delivering plush dark fruit, brambly tannins, and a refreshing acidity that keeps it balanced. The finish is chewy and stony, with a lingering minerality that speaks to its rocky origins. Clocking in around 14.5% ABV, it marries hedonistic pleasure with terroir-driven complexity.
Created to celebrate Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant’s 50th anniversary, this wine embodies Lynch’s philosophy of championing authentic, unmanipulated wines that reflect their place of origin. It’s a versatile pour—pair it with grilled meats, charcuterie, or a Provençal vegetable stew. Drinkable now with a quick decant, it can also cellar for 3-5 years, deepening in nuance. Affordable and expressive, this cuvée is a delicious snapshot of southern Rhône artistry and a testament to the enduring partnership between Lynch and Estézargues’ vignerons.
