Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from Cirelli, crafted by Agricola Cirelli in Abruzzo, Italy, is another stellar offering from Francesco Cirelli’s organic and natural winemaking venture. Located near Atri, roughly 8 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea, the 22-hectare certified organic estate benefits from a distinctive terroir shaped by clay-limestone soils, coastal breezes, and the proximity of the Apennine Mountains. This setting is ideal for the Montepulciano grape, a native variety that thrives in Abruzzo and forms the backbone of the region’s bold, character-driven red wines.
Cirelli produces Montepulciano d'Abruzzo in two notable styles: a classic red and an amphora-aged version, often labeled as "Anfora." For the classic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, the organically grown grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine sees a moderate maceration period—typically around 10-15 days—to extract color, flavor, and soft tannins from the skins. It’s then aged for several months, often in stainless steel or neutral vessels, to preserve the grape’s vibrant fruit profile. The result is a medium-bodied red with around 13% alcohol, showcasing deep ruby hues and aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and hints of violets, with subtle earthy and spicy undertones. On the palate, it’s juicy and approachable, with smooth tannins, bright acidity, and a lingering finish—making it an excellent match for pasta with meat sauces, grilled meats, or aged Pecorino cheese.
Francesco Cirelli’s philosophy—rooted in organic farming, minimal intervention, and respect for nature—shines through in both wines. The estate’s holistic approach, blending vineyards with olive trees, crops, and livestock, enhances the purity of the Montepulciano grape’s expression. Whether in the fresh, fruit-forward classic or the earthy, amphora-aged rendition, Cirelli’s Montepulciano d'Abruzzo embodies the soul of Abruzzo: rustic yet refined, tied to tradition yet open to innovation. It’s a testament to the region’s winemaking heritage and Cirelli’s dedication to letting the land speak through the bottle.
