Trebbiano d'Abruzzo from Cirelli, produced by Agricola Cirelli in Abruzzo, Italy, is a standout example of natural winemaking with a focus on organic and minimal-intervention practices. Francesco Cirelli, along with his partner Michela, runs this 22-hectare certified organic farm near the village of Atri, about 8 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. The estate’s location benefits from a unique microclimate, shaped by the sea’s influence and the nearby Apennine Mountains, while the clay and limestone-rich soils provide an ideal foundation for growing indigenous grape varieties like Trebbiano.
The Trebbiano d'Abruzzo from Cirelli comes in two main expressions: a classic white wine and an orange wine variant, often labeled as "Anfora" when fermented in amphorae. For the white version, the organically grown Trebbiano grapes are typically destemmed, undergo a short maceration (around 24 hours), and are then softly pressed. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, followed by a few months of aging on the lees, which adds texture and complexity. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its natural character. It’s a dry, light-bodied wine with around 12% alcohol, featuring delicate aromas of white flowers, peach, apple, and a touch of minerality. On the palate, it’s refreshing, with vibrant acidity and a clean, crisp finish—perfect for pairing with seafood, vegetable dishes, or light pastas.
Cirelli’s commitment to sustainability shines through in both wines. The farm integrates vineyards with olive groves, wheat fields, and livestock, fostering biodiversity and respecting natural cycles. The result is a Trebbiano d'Abruzzo that reflects Abruzzo’s terroir authentically—whether in the fresh, straightforward white or the bold, expressive orange. Each bottle captures the essence of the region’s coastal-mountain duality and Francesco’s hands-off philosophy, making these wines a true taste of place.
