Clos de la Roilette Fleurie is an elegant and expressive red wine from the Fleurie appellation in Beaujolais, France, produced by the Coudert family at their historic estate near the border with Moulin-à-Vent. Made exclusively from Gamay grapes grown on granitic soils with manganese influences, this wine reflects the unique terroir of one of Beaujolais’ most celebrated crus. The vines, averaging 40 to 80 years old across the estate’s 9 hectares, are tended sustainably with minimal chemical intervention, showcasing the Couderts’ dedication to traditional viticulture and quality fruit.
The production of Clos de la Roilette Fleurie follows classic Beaujolais methods with a modern touch. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo semi-carbonic maceration—a hallmark of the region—where whole clusters ferment for 10-14 days in concrete vats, extracting vibrant fruit flavors and soft tannins. The wine then ages for about 6-9 months in large, neutral foudres (large oak barrels), which rounds out its structure without imparting overt oak influence. It is bottled with minimal filtration and a small dose of sulfur to preserve its freshness and character.
In the glass, it pours a brilliant ruby-red with violet hues, hinting at its youthful energy. The nose is a captivating bouquet of ripe red fruits—raspberries, cherries, and red currants—intertwined with floral notes of peonies and violets, a signature of Fleurie’s “feminine” charm. Subtle hints of spice, graphite, and wet stone add depth, reflecting the granitic terroir. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and silky, with bright acidity, plush fruit, and fine, velvety tannins that lend a refined yet approachable structure. The finish is long and mineral-tinged, with a lingering freshness that beckons another sip. Typically around 13% alcohol, it balances richness with elegance.
Clos de la Roilette Fleurie is a versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with roasted poultry, charcuterie, or earthy dishes like mushroom risotto. Serve at 14-16°C to highlight its fruit and finesse. While delicious upon release, it can age gracefully for 5-10 years, developing more complex, earthy nuances over time. This wine stands out as a benchmark Fleurie, blending the appellation’s floral grace with the Coudert family’s distinctive, slightly more structured style—a testament to their legacy since taking over the estate in the 1960s.
