Nestled in the sun-kissed Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil appellation along France's Loire Valley, the 2023 Hurluberlu from Domaine Sébastien David is a joyous, scatterbrained ode to Cabernet Franc—named after the French term for "wild and crazy," it captures the exuberant spirit of this 15th-generation family estate (tracing back to 1634). Sébastien, born in 1974, tends 15 hectares of vines planted by his grandparents during World War II, spread across clay-limestone, sand, tuffeau, and gravel soils to dodge frost risks, all farmed organically (Ecocert-certified) with biodynamic flair and zero chemical inputs. This unfiltered, unfined natural red skips added sulfites entirely—protected instead by carbonic maceration and CO2—undergoing foot-trodden wild-yeast fermentation in amphorae and neutral wood for a pure, hazy "vin de terroir" at 13% ABV that bursts with untamed vitality and zero pretense.Cloudy ruby in the glass with a faint pétillant fizz, it leaps with a punchy nose of snappy cherries, tart cranberries, and kirsch, woven with herbal vegetal whispers, violette florals, black pepper zing, and earthy forest-floor undertones laced in minerality. On the palate, it's crunchy and quenchable—light to medium-bodied with a velvety snap of raspberry, red currant, and medicinal cherry that dances in lively acidity, savory liquorice tension, and a saline, gravelly grip, finishing with a bright, moreish echo. Best slightly chilled (14-16°C) for peak refreshment, it's the ultimate picnic pal or aperitif star, pairing flawlessly with charcuterie boards, grilled sausages, herb-roasted veggies, or a casual French onion tart. Drink now through 2026 for its youthful frolic, or share it among friends to spark uninhibited laughs—this is Cabernet Franc unchained, proving natural reds can be as deliciously approachable as they are profoundly alive.
