DE MENA Contak Rouge Carginan '23

A vibrant, light-hearted red from the rugged hills of Paziols in the southern Roussillon (Languedoc-Roussillon), this is Domaine de Mena’s playful, “funky” take on Carignan.

Crafted from 90% Carignan and 10% Grenache Gris from old vines planted around 1990, the 2023 vintage underwent a short 5-day maceration followed by 8 months of élevage in stainless steel tanks. The result is a fresh, fluid, and highly drinkable “jus de Carignan” — bright, energetic, and full of pure fruit character with a natural edge.

In the glass, expect a pale-to-medium ruby hue and an expressive nose of red and black fruits (think juicy black cherry, blueberry, and raspberry) laced with subtle spice, thyme, lilac, and a hint of flinty minerality. On the palate, it’s lively and precise, with fine-grained tannins, refreshing acidity, and a long, ethereal finish that keeps it feeling light and precise rather than heavy.

This is a quintessential natural-leaning wine: organic farming, minimal intervention, no heavy oak, and maximum pleasure. Perfect chilled slightly for barbecue, charcuterie, casual weeknight meals, or simply on its own. It’s the kind of bottle that disappears fast — pure, juicy, and seriously fun.
