Deux Punx Barbera is a captivating natural red wine from Deux Punx, a minimalist winemaking project founded in 2008 by Dan Schaaf and Aaron Olson, two self-described "aging punkers" based in Napa, California. Crafted in their shared roll-up garage in the River East neighborhood, this wine embodies their DIY ethos and punk-inspired rebellion against conventional winemaking. The Barbera grapes are sourced from organically farmed vineyards, often from San Benito County, where the variety thrives in Pleasanton gravelly loam soils at elevations of 460-525 feet, though specific vineyard details may vary by vintage.
True to their hands-off approach, Deux Punx ferments this Barbera with native yeasts, using neutral oak or stainless steel for aging, and bottles it unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal sulfur dioxide—sometimes as low as 20 mg/L or none at all. The process emphasizes the grape’s natural character over manipulation, resulting in a wine that’s vibrant and unpolished. With an alcohol content typically around 12-12.5%, it’s light on its feet yet packed with personality.
In the glass, Deux Punx Barbera pours a deep ruby, hinting at its Italian heritage but with a distinctly Californian twist. The nose offers a burst of tart cherry, blackberry, and dried strawberry, layered with earthy notes of dried leaves or herbs—a nod to its Piedmontese roots tempered by New World fruit-forwardness. On the palate, it’s juicy and bright, with high acidity cutting through low tannins, delivering flavors of sour plum, red currant, and a touch of spice like anise or white pepper. The finish is fresh and slightly grippy, inviting another sip.
This Barbera is a versatile food wine—pair it with rich dishes like braised short ribs, mushroom risotto, or a sharp Pecorino to balance its acidity. Serve it slightly chilled (55-60°F) to accentuate its lively edge. Reflecting Deux Punx’s philosophy of letting the vineyard shine, this wine is less about polish and more about raw, honest expression—perfect for those who crave a punk rock riff in their glass. Small production (often under 200 cases) and quirky, artist-designed labels make each bottle a unique snapshot of their unconventional journey.
