Deux Punx White Blend is a refreshing and unconventional natural wine from Napa, California, crafted by Dan Schaaf and Aaron Olson, two self-described “aging punkers” who founded their label in 2008. True to their punk rock ethos, this wine embodies a minimalist, DIY approach, made from a field blend of organically farmed grapes—typically Chardonnay, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Muscat Blanc—sourced from the sandy delta soils of Contra Costa County. The duo’s goal is to let the raw character of the fruit and terroir shine, avoiding over-manipulation and embracing the quirks of each vintage.
The winemaking process is straightforward yet deliberate: grapes are hand-harvested on the same day and co-fermented with native yeasts in neutral oak barrels for about 7-8 months, skipping blending trials to preserve spontaneity. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulfites (often under 20 mg/L), it retains a slight haze and a lively, unpolished edge. This hands-off method reflects Deux Punx’s anti-establishment spirit, prioritizing authenticity over polish.
In the glass, the White Blend pours a pale, cloudy straw color, hinting at its natural profile. The nose is a playful mix of tropical and floral notes—think mango, starfruit, and orange blossom from the Muscat, with a lean, mineral backbone from the Chardonnay and Rhone varieties. On the palate, it’s light-bodied and juicy, with soft acidity and a crisp, dry finish that carries a touch of salinity and white pepper. At around 10.8-11.7% alcohol, it’s an easy-drinking wine that doesn’t skimp on personality.
