DRINK THIS WINE Skin Contact is a radiant, gluggable orange wine born from the creative partnership between chef and flavor maven Molly Baz and natural winemaker Andrew Reginald Young of The Marigny, based in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Crafted with organic grapes from the 2023 vintage, this skin-contact white blend features 75% Riesling, 15% Pinot Gris, and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from the region’s volcanic and loess soils. It’s a wine designed to match the bold, bright personality of Baz’s cooking—unfussy, vibrant, and made for eating.
The winemaking is pure and minimal: Riesling is destemmed and macerated traditionally, with juice pumped over the skins daily for about a week, while Pinot Gris undergoes semi-carbonic fermentation and Sauvignon Blanc adds a direct-press freshness. Fermentation unfolds naturally with ambient yeasts in a mix of stainless steel and neutral barrels, followed by blending in tank with just a pinch of SO2 (around 20 ppm) before bottling. Unfined and unfiltered, it clocks in at 12.1% alcohol, preserving its lively, unpolished charm.
In the glass, it glows a hazy amber-orange, a testament to its skin-contact roots. The nose is a tropical explosion—ripe mango, pineapple, and apricot from Riesling mingle with grapefruit and blood orange zest from Pinot Gris, grounded by Sauvignon Blanc’s subtle passionfruit and cantaloupe whispers. A faint grassy note and a touch of tannin peek through, keeping it from veering too funky. On the palate, it’s tart and juicy, with a light tannic grip and zesty acidity that dances into a dry, citrus-driven finish. Molly calls it “gummy peaches from the penny candy shop,” and that playful nostalgia shines through.
This wine is a food-pairing powerhouse—think grilled seafood like fish tacos, spicy shrimp, or a creamy goat cheese salad. Serve it chilled (45-55°F) for maximum refreshment, though it’s versatile enough for breakfast sipping (no judgment here). DRINK THIS WINE Skin Contact is casual yet bold, a perfect match for Baz’s culinary vibe and Young’s natural wine finesse—a bottle that begs to be glugged with abandon.
