"Folk" from Cantina Indigeno is a vibrant, natural orange wine hailing from the rugged hills of Abruzzo, Italy, crafted by a quartet of friends—Alfredo Giugno, Nicola Reginaldi, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara—who transitioned from brewing beer to championing minimal-intervention winemaking. This wine is a blend of indigenous white grapes, typically Trebbiano, Pecorino, and the rare, aromatic Montonico, sourced from high-elevation vineyards around Teramo, where cool mountain air and stony limestone soils shape their character. Produced since the winery’s founding in 2016, "Folk" reflects Cantina Indigeno’s mission to revive forgotten varieties and abandoned plots, resulting in a wine that’s both a nod to tradition and a bold expression of their experimental roots.
Made with spontaneous fermentation using wild yeasts and a brief period of skin contact—often around 8 days—in open vats without temperature control, "Folk" is aged in stainless steel or fiberglass, preserving its freshness and raw energy. Unfined, unfiltered, and free of added sulfites, it pours a hazy golden-orange, hinting at its untamed nature. The nose bursts with ripe stone fruit—think peach and apricot—mingled with citrus zest, a touch of wild herbs, and a subtle cidery funk. On the palate, it’s dry and lively, with a gentle tannic grip, bright acidity, and flavors of juicy orange, tart plum, and a chalky minerality, finishing with a warm, sun-kissed glow.
With an alcohol content around 10.5-12%, "Folk" is a versatile, picnic-ready pour, pairing beautifully with salty snacks, roasted vegetables, or soft cheeses. It’s a wine that embodies the carefree spirit of Abruzzo’s natural wine renaissance—rustic, refreshing, and unapologetically alive, like a folk song echoing through the mountains.
