The Jean Foillard Beaujolais-Villages 2023 is a vibrant and authentic representation of Beaujolais’ charm, crafted by the legendary natural winemaker Jean Foillard. Sourced from old-vine Gamay grapes grown in the granitic soils surrounding the villages of Beaujolais, this wine embodies Foillard’s commitment to minimal intervention and terroir-driven winemaking. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented using whole-cluster carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts for about 2 to 3 weeks, followed by aging in neutral oak barrels for 6 months. True to Foillard’s philosophy, the wine sees little to no sulfur at bottling and is unfiltered, preserving its raw, lively character.
In the glass, the 2023 Beaujolais-Villages reveals a bright ruby color with a bouquet bursting with fresh red fruits—think juicy raspberry, strawberry, and a touch of cranberry—layered with delicate floral notes of peony and a whisper of crushed stone minerality. On the palate, it’s light-bodied yet expressive, with a silky texture, crisp acidity, and soft, integrated tannins that give it a playful, gulpable quality. Subtle hints of spice and a faint earthy undertone round out the finish, leaving a clean, refreshing impression. This is a wine that radiates youthful energy and purity, perfect for casual sipping or pairing with charcuterie, light pastas, or soft cheeses. While delightful now, it also has the potential to evolve gracefully over a few years, revealing more nuance with time.
