The Morgon Vieilles Vignes (VV) 2023 from Domaine Jean-Paul et Charly Thévenet is a captivating red wine that exemplifies the finesse and depth of Beaujolais’ Morgon cru, crafted by one of the region’s most revered natural wine producers. Made from 100% Gamay grapes sourced from old vines—some over 70 years old—planted in the granitic and schist-laden soils of Villié-Morgon, this wine reflects the Thévenet family’s dedication to organic and biodynamic farming. The 2023 vintage, shaped by a warm growing season tempered by well-timed rains, produced lower yields (around 40 hL/ha), resulting in concentrated fruit with vibrant acidity.
Vinification follows the domaine’s traditional, low-intervention ethos: hand-harvested grapes undergo whole-cluster, semi-carbonic fermentation with native yeasts in concrete tanks, an “infusion” method with minimal manipulation. The wine is then aged for 6-8 months on its fine lees in neutral oak barrels, bottled unfiltered with only a trace of sulfur added just before bottling. This approach preserves the wine’s purity and allows the terroir to shine.
Pouring a bright ruby with purple edges, Morgon VV 2023 offers an aromatic bouquet of ripe red cherries, cassis, and violets, accented by subtle spice (think white pepper) and a stony minerality that nods to its granite origins. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with a silky texture, delivering juicy fruit alongside fine, chalky tannins and a lively acid backbone. There’s an earthy, rustic charm—hints of forest floor and iron—that balances its elegance, finishing with a crisp, lingering freshness.
This is a classic Thévenet Morgon: approachable now with a slight chill (serve at 16-18°C) and a quick decant, it pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, charcuterie, or earthy mushroom dishes. Yet, its structure promises evolution over 5-10 years, deepening in complexity. A member of the “Gang of Four” alongside Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet—now joined by his son Charly—continues to set the standard for soulful, natural Gamay, making this 2023 a must-try for Beaujolais lovers.
