Le Briseau "Konjo Fouzitou" is an exuberant and unconventional natural red wine from the Languedoc region of southern France, produced by Nathalie Gaubicher under her Nana, Vins et Cie label, an extension of her work with Domaine Le Briseau. This wine is a blend of Cinsault and Terret—two workhorse grapes common in the region—sourced from organically farmed vineyards with a mix of terroirs, including rolled pebbles, clay-limestone, and basalt soils. It reflects Gaubicher’s commitment to minimal-intervention winemaking, a legacy she continues from her late husband Christian Chaussard, a pivotal figure in the natural wine movement.
The production process is deliberately simple and non-intrusive: hand-harvested grapes undergo spontaneous co-fermentation with native yeasts, typically in stainless steel or concrete vats, with a short maceration period to preserve freshness and fruit. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal sulfites (total SO2 < 15 mg/L), "Konjo Fouzitou" retains a lively, slightly volatile character that’s emblematic of natural wines. The result is a light, juicy red with a touch of funk and a vibrant personality.
In the glass, it pours a translucent garnet, hinting at its delicate extraction. The nose is fresh and inviting, with floral notes—think violets or rose petals—mingling with juicy red fruit like candied cherry and raspberry, plus a spicy kick of sumac and a faint barnyard edge. On the palate, it’s round and ample, with a supple, almost silky texture interrupted by a subtle tannic grip and a lively acidity driven by volatile tension. The finish is punchy and fruit-forward, with a lingering freshness that appeals to fans of natural wine’s raw charm. Alcohol typically hovers around 12-13%.
"Konjo Fouzitou" is a quintessential glou-glou wine—meant for easy drinking rather than contemplation. Serve it slightly chilled at 15-17°C alongside charcuterie, grilled vegetables, or a casual picnic spread. Its quirky name and playful profile make it a standout, embodying Nathalie’s creative spirit and the couple’s enduring influence on natural winemaking. Enjoy it young to capture its vibrant energy.
