Mai & Kenji Hodgson "Luchini Blanc" 2023 is a radiant natural wine from the Anjou region of the Loire Valley, crafted by the talented Canadian-Japanese duo, Mai and Kenji Hodgson. This wine is a pure expression of Chenin Blanc, sourced from their own organically farmed vines near Faye d’Anjou, typically reserved for their acclaimed Faïa cuvée. Grown on schist-laden soils, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in a mix of old barrels and large foudres, blending the 2022 and 2023 vintages (as indicated by lot number LLB22/23). True to their minimal-intervention philosophy, it’s vinified without additives, unfined, unfiltered, and bottled with no added sulfur, resulting in a vibrant, living wine.
The Luchini Blanc pours a pale, slightly hazy gold, reflecting its natural clarity. On the nose, it’s open and expressive, offering a bouquet of white peach, pear, and wet stone, with a delicate overlay of citrus blossom and a hint of chalky minerality. The palate is sleek and elongated, striking a balance between tension and generosity—crisp acidity drives flavors of green apple and lemon pith, while the two-vintage blend lends a harmonious depth without feeling austere. A subtle saline finish rounds it out, leaving a refreshing, mouthwatering impression. This is a Chenin Blanc that’s both electric and approachable, ideal with shellfish, lean fish, or a fruit-driven dessert. It’s a testament to Mai and Kenji’s skill in capturing Anjou’s terroir with soulful precision.
