The Morgon "N" 2023 from Domaine Marcel Lapierre is a quintessential expression of natural winemaking from one of Beaujolais’ most iconic producers. Crafted by Mathieu and Camille Lapierre, who carry forward the legacy of their father Marcel, this cuvée is made from 100% Gamay grapes grown on the granitic and schistous soils of the Morgon appellation. The "N" designation signifies its sulfur-free status—no sulfur dioxide is added during vinification or bottling—highlighting the family’s commitment to purity and minimal intervention.
Sourced from old vines averaging 60 years of age, including some parcels from the prestigious Côte du Py, the grapes are hand-harvested at peak ripeness to ensure vibrant fruit character. The 2023 vintage faced challenges like sunburn and hail, reducing yields from a typical 65 hL/ha to 40 hL/ha, which concentrated the flavors further. Vinification follows the domaine’s traditional methods: whole-cluster, semi-carbonic fermentation with native yeasts in concrete or stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in neutral oak barrels for several months. The wine is bottled unfiltered, preserving its lively, unadulterated essence.
In the glass, Morgon "N" 2023 reveals a ruby hue with violet reflections. The nose is expressive, offering a bouquet of dark berries—think blackberry and cassis—mingled with sous-bois (forest floor) hints, subtle Indian ink, and the classic Morgon signatures of cherry, violet, and a whisper of licorice. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with a juicy, pliant texture, framed by soft, rounded tannins and crisp acidity. There’s a rustic charm to its slightly savory finish, balancing freshness with earthy depth. This wine captures the "living" quality the Lapierres strive for—bright, fruit-forward, yet structured and terroir-driven.
Best enjoyed lightly chilled (16-18°C) after a brief decanting, Morgon "N" 2023 pairs beautifully with charcuterie, roasted poultry, or hearty vegetable dishes like root vegetables with raclette. While delightful now for its youthful energy, it has the potential to evolve gracefully over 5-10 years, gaining complexity. A testament to Marcel Lapierre’s pioneering spirit and the domaine’s status as a benchmark for natural Beaujolais, this wine is both a pleasure bomb and a purist’s delight.
