The Marigny "Mixed Emotions" is a captivating natural wine from St. Reginald Parish, the winemaking venture of Andrew Reginald Young, a former New Orleans rock drummer who traded sticks for vines in 2012. Produced in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, this wine is a playful, genre-defying blend of organically farmed grapes, primarily Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, sourced from cool-climate vineyard sites. The 2022 vintage, for instance, combines several of The Marigny’s cuvées—Carbonic Pinot Noir, Carbonic Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir Rosé, and Direct Press Pinot Gris—into a single, harmonious expression that defies strict categorization.
Crafted with a low-intervention ethos, "Mixed Emotions" undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, often incorporating carbonic maceration to keep the fruit light and vibrant. It’s aged briefly in tank and bottle, bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal added sulfites—sometimes as low as 20 ppm—preserving its raw, living character. The result is a wine that’s "kinda red, a bit rosé, a touch of skin contact," with an alcohol content around 11.8%, making it refreshingly approachable.
In the glass, it pours a hazy, pale ruby with a slight amber edge from the skin contact. The nose bursts with bright red fruit—cherry, raspberry, and strawberry—mingled with citrusy Pinot Gris notes like grapefruit and orange peel, plus a subtle funky edge of wet stone or forest floor. On the palate, it’s light-bodied yet dynamic, balancing juicy fruit with a whisper of tannin, zesty acidity, and a crisp, dry finish that invites versatility—serve it at room temp, chilled, or even over ice for a rebellious twist.
Dubbed a "Modern Table Wine," "Mixed Emotions" is all about adaptability and fun. It pairs effortlessly with charcuterie, grilled veggies, fried chicken, or even a cozy brunch spread. Young’s creation feels like a love letter to the Willamette Valley’s volcanic soils and his own eclectic journey—a wine that’s familiar yet new, serious yet carefree, and perfect for any occasion that calls for "all the feels."
