MASA Original Tortilla Chips are a unique take on classic tortilla chips, designed to offer a healthier and more traditional snacking option. They are handmade using just three natural ingredients: organic corn, grass-fed beef tallow, and sea salt. Unlike most commercially available tortilla chips, which are typically fried in seed oils like canola or vegetable oil, MASA chips are fried in beef tallow, a traditional fat that’s been used for centuries before falling out of favor in modern industrial food production. This choice reflects a growing interest in avoiding seed oils, which some health-conscious consumers link to inflammation and other health concerns due to their high polyunsaturated fat content.
The corn used in MASA chips is organic and non-GMO, sourced from small regional farmers. It undergoes nixtamalization, an ancient Central American process where the corn is soaked in an alkaline solution (traditionally lime or wood ash) to break down its outer layer. This not only makes the corn easier to grind into masa harina (the flour used for the chips) but also enhances its nutritional value by unlocking vitamins like niacin and making minerals more bioavailable. The result is a chip that’s pesticide-free and rooted in traditional methods, contrasting with the heavily processed corn found in many mainstream brands.
The use of 100% grass-fed beef tallow gives these chips a distinct flavor profile—rich and savory, with a satisfying crunch that doesn’t rely on artificial additives or preservatives. Tallow is a saturated fat, which some claim helps you feel fuller on fewer calories compared to seed oil-based chips, though formal studies on this specific product are lacking. Customers often describe the taste as nostalgic yet elevated, reminiscent of classic tortilla chips but with a cleaner, more robust finish. The chips are thick enough to hold up to dips like salsa or guacamole without breaking, making them a practical choice for snacking.
