Monte Bernardi's "Retromarcia" Chianti Classico is a soul-stirring expression of pure Sangiovese, hailing from the hallowed hills of Panzano in Chianti—the southernmost cru of the Chianti Classico zone in Tuscany, Italy—where third-generation winemaker Andrea Bezzari tends 25 hectares of certified organic vineyards on a mosaic of galestro shale, pietraforte sandstone, and alberese limestone soils that impart minerality and elegance to the fruit. Planted between 2006 and 2010 at 300-400 meters elevation with south- and west-facing expositions, these estate vines yield just 4,500 kg per hectare, ensuring concentrated flavors in this traditional yet vibrant DOCG red, with an annual production of around 50,000 bottles.Hand-harvested grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel and concrete vessels, featuring extended skin maceration of up to 45 days at uncontrolled temperatures peaking at 30°C, followed by natural malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for 16 months—70% in French oak tonneaux and 30% in cement—to weave structure without oak dominance, emerging unfiltered with total sulfur under 25 mg/L and a poised 13.5% ABV, evoking the rustic authenticity of old-school Chianti. In the glass, it gleams with a brilliant ruby red tinged with youthful purple edges. The bouquet erupts with vivid aromas of wild red berries, tart cherries, and mountain herbs, laced with subtle aniseed, stems, leaves, and warm spices like clove. On the palate, it's medium-bodied and refreshingly vibrant, balancing juicy red and dark fruits—cranberry, wild cherry, plums—with savory earthiness, noble fine tannins, bright acidity, and a whisper of minerality, culminating in a long, persistent finish that's both elegant and punchy. This versatile gem, named "Retromarcia" to honor a backward glance at Chianti's storied past, pairs seamlessly with classic Tuscan fare like ribollita soup, grilled bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù, or medium-aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano, inviting conviviality around the table.
