Porter-Bass Pinot Noir 2022 is an elegant, site-driven expression of California's cool-climate prowess, hailing from the biodynamically farmed Mays Canyon Estate in the Russian River Valley's Green Valley sub-appellation, Sonoma County—where century-old vines, revived in 1980 by Dirck and Sue Bass, perch on steep hillsides nine miles from the Pacific Ocean, basking in fog-kissed mornings and afternoon sun to yield nuanced, low-yield fruit. Under the stewardship of winemaker Luke Bass—whose pedigree includes apprenticeships with Greg LaFollette at Flowers Winery and stints at Hirsch and Tandem—this estate-grown 100% Pinot Noir reflects meticulous canopy management for riper berries, fermented with native yeasts in small lots, and aged in French oak (about 30% new) for 10 months to balance vibrancy with subtle structure, clocking in at a graceful 12.1% ABV.In the glass, it shimmers with a translucent ruby hue, unveiling a bouquet of bright red cherries, wild strawberries, and ripe raspberries, laced with hints of vanilla pod, autumn leaves, and a whisper of earthy tobacco. The palate is light-bodied yet intensely focused, weaving juicy black cherry and blackberry core with savory notes of cola, spice, and loamy forest floor, framed by silky medium tannins, lively acidity, and a fresh, mineral-driven finish that echoes the site's maritime elegance—earning nods for its classic, savory style.
