Porter-Bass Zinfandel "Dot's Garden" 2018 is a poised, elegant riff on California's Zinfandel, born from the biodynamically farmed Dot's Garden Estate Vineyard in the cool, fog-veiled Russian River Valley of Sonoma County—a steep, south-facing hillside where 35-year-old vines cling to Goldridge soils, hand-tended by winemaker Luke Bass to yield intensely concentrated yet refreshingly balanced fruit from low-vigor, low-yield parcels that demand meticulous, labor-intensive care. This single-vineyard expression of 100% Zinfandel honors the site's exotic intensity through minimal-intervention winemaking: hand-harvested clusters ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in small open-top fermenters, undergoing gentle extraction before aging 10 months in neutral French oak and concrete to preserve vibrancy without wood influence, emerging unfiltered at a restrained 14% ABV for a medium-bodied profile that's lighter and more acid-driven than the jammy stereotype. In the glass, it glows with a translucent garnet hue. The bouquet unfolds with intriguing layers of violet florals, baking spices like cinnamon and clove, orange peel zest, dried herbs, and a whisper of applesauce warmth. On the palate, it's tart and focused, weaving juicy red fruits—bing cherry, fresh plum, and black cherry tart—with savory accents of rhubarb, coco nib, and a subtle black pepper snap, all framed by mild tannins, bright balanced acidity, and a fresh, almost effervescent mid-palate that evokes a Pinot-like finesse, lingering into an exotic, spice-tinged finish.
