Podere Pradarolo Velius is a captivating natural red wine crafted by Alberto and Claudia Carretti at their organic estate in Varano de’ Melegari, nestled in the hills of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Made from 100% Barbera grapes grown on clay-rich soils at 250 to 500 meters above sea level, this wine embodies the winery’s minimalist, traditional approach. The grapes undergo an extended 90-day maceration on the skins, followed by spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and aging for 15 months in large oak barrels. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites, Velius reveals a deep ruby color with violet tinges. Its aroma is a complex interplay of ripe red cherries, blackberries, and blueberries, accented by earthy and balsamic notes. On the palate, it’s full-bodied yet vibrant, with juicy fruit, lively acidity, and soft, well-integrated tannins, finishing with a touch of minerality. At around 14% ABV, this robust, low-sulfite wine pairs beautifully with cured meats, roasted dishes, or aged cheeses, offering a pure, territorial expression of Barbera’s potential when shaped by nature and time.
