Rabasco Rosso Cancelli is a vibrant, natural red wine from the Abruzzo region of Italy, crafted by Iole Rabasco, a passionate winemaker who traded law for vines in the early 2000s. Made from 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo grapes, it comes from the “Cancelli” vineyard—a 4-hectare plot perched 450 meters above sea level in Loreto Aprutino, Pescara province. The 40-year-old vines, trained in the traditional pergola style, root into clay-limestone soils, basking in a microclimate shaped by the nearby Gran Sasso mountains and Adriatic Sea, just 40 kilometers away. This setting lends the wine a fresh, mineral edge.
True to Rabasco’s low-intervention ethos, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in cement or fiberglass tanks, without temperature control. A brief 4-7 day skin maceration adds a touch of structure, followed by aging in stainless steel—no added sulfur, no fining, no filtration. The result is a ruby-red wine, sometimes slightly cloudy, bursting with juicy cherries (red and black), cranberry, and sour fruit notes, layered with earthy undertones, herbal spices, and a saline finish. It’s light-bodied yet expressive, with bright acidity and soft, fine tannins, making it a versatile, gulpable red.
Clocking in around 12-13% ABV, it’s perfect chilled (14-16°C) as an aperitif or paired with hearty dishes like pork ramen, lamb ragù pasta, or a rustic pasta e fagioli. Priced between $25-$40 for a 750ml bottle, it’s a steal for natural wine enthusiasts seeking Abruzzo’s soul in a glass—unfussy, authentic, and alive with terroir.
