If you’re a fan of natural wines with a story, Radikon Jakot (1000ml) deserves a spot on your radar. Hailing from the rugged hills of Oslavia in Friuli, Italy—right on the Slovenian border—this orange wine is a masterpiece from the iconic Radikon family. Crafted from 100% Friulano grapes (once called Tocai Friulano), its name “Jakot” is a clever jab at EU regulations that banned the use of “Tokaj” outside Hungary—yep, it’s “Tokaj” spelled backward, a little rebellious wink from winemaker Stanko Radikon and his wife Suzana.
This wine is all about patience and purity. Grown biodynamically on steep, mineral-rich “ponca” soils (a mix of marl and sandstone), the old vines—some over 25 years old—yield low but intensely flavorful fruit. Harvested by hand, the grapes spend 2-3 months macerating on their skins in Slavonian oak vats, fermenting naturally with wild yeasts and no temperature control. After that, it ages for three years in large oak barrels, followed by at least a year in the bottle—all without filtration, fining, or added sulfites. The result? A hazy, deep golden-orange pour that’s as alive as it gets.
On the nose, expect a wild ride: dried apricots, orange peel, almonds, and a stony minerality, with hints of spice and something faintly ethereal. Take a sip, and it’s bold yet balanced—think juicy stone fruit, a touch of tannic grip, and a long, fresh finish with that classic Friulano almondy edge. At around 13% alcohol, it’s got enough heft to stand up to food but remains remarkably approachable for such an intense skin-contact wine.
The 1000ml bottle is a signature Radikon move—designed by Stanko himself with a slim neck and cork to mimic the aging conditions of a magnum, giving you an extra 250ml of goodness to savor. Pair it with a plate of salumi (especially lardo on crusty bread), a hearty Friulian stew, or even fried goodies—it’s versatile and loves bold flavors.
Now led by Stanko’s son Saša since his passing in 2016, Radikon continues to push the boundaries of natural winemaking. Jakot isn’t just a wine; it’s a statement—uncompromising, soulful, and a true taste of Friuli’s wild spirit. Grab a liter, pour it at 10-12°C, and let it unfold over a long evening. You won’t be disappointed.
