"Boombox" from Sete is a striking natural orange wine produced in the Amaseno River Valley of Lazio, Italy, by the small, socially driven winery founded in 2013 by Emiliano Pandolfi and Arcangelo Galuppi. This project, rooted in Priverno near the Circeo National Park, aims to revive abandoned vineyards and preserve the region’s viticultural heritage. "Boombox" is crafted from old-vine Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, often blended with other local varieties like Ottonese or Trebbiano, grown on limestone-rich soils that impart a subtle mineral edge. The name "Boombox" pays homage to the iconic portable radios of the 1980s and ‘90s, symbolizing a bridge between rural traditions and urban energy.
This wine undergoes a natural winemaking process: grapes are hand-harvested, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, and macerated on their skins for about two weeks to a month in fiberglass tanks, depending on the vintage. It’s then aged in fiberglass and bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfites, resulting in a hazy, amber-hued pour that reflects its unadulterated character. The nose bursts with aromas of bitter orange peel, Mediterranean herbs like myrtle and mastic, and a hint of warm spice—cinnamon or clove. On the palate, it’s dry and medium-bodied, with a lively acidity that balances its ripe fruit notes—think candied citrus, apricot, and a touch of wild honey—against a gentle tannic grip and a chalky, refreshing finish.
With an alcohol content around 12-12.5%, "Boombox" is both approachable and complex, pairing beautifully with fish appetizers, seafood crudo, stuffed pasta, or herb-roasted white meats. Best served chilled at 6-8°C in tulip glasses, it’s a wine to enjoy fresh but can evolve intriguingly with a few years in the cellar. Sete’s "Boombox" embodies their ethos of sustainability and authenticity, delivering a raw, expressive taste of Lazio’s forgotten vineyards in every sip.
