Stirm Wine Co. Benitoite 2022 is a captivating red table wine from California's San Benito County, crafted by winemaker Ryan Stirm. Named after benitoite—California's ultra-rare state gem, found exclusively in one remote mine here—this wine pays homage to the region's rugged history and unique grapes, serving as a varietal ode to the "holy trinity" of Cabernet Pfeffer (grown only in San Benito), Negrette, and Zinfandel. The 2022 vintage blends 46% Cabernet Pfeffer, 31% Zinfandel, and 23% Negrette, sourced from ancient, dry-farmed, head-trained bush vines—including 120-year-old plantings. Fruit comes from Siletto Vineyard (Cabernet Pfeffer and Negrette), Gimelli Vineyard (Cabernet Pfeffer and Zinfandel), and the historic Wirz Vineyard (Zinfandel), all in the gravelly, limestone-influenced soils of Cienega Valley. Organically farmed and hand-harvested over six picks, the winemaking is low-intervention: about two-thirds whole-cluster fermentation in redwood vats (9–17 days maceration, gentle pumpovers), spontaneous native yeasts, full malolactic, aging on fine lees in neutral barrels, minimal sulfur. Unfined, unfiltered, completely dry, bright acidity, and a balanced 13.5% ABV. Just 416 cases produced.Light-to-medium bodied yet deeply expressive, it offers white pepper and herbal notes from the rare Cabernet Pfeffer, juicy pomegranate and savory strawberry, red fruits, wet earth, black pepper, bay leaf, and mossy mineral undertones. Silky, vibrant, and versatile—chill lightly for BBQs, charcuterie, or spicy dishes.
