Swick Pinot Noir is a captivating, natural-leaning red wine from Oregon’s Willamette Valley, crafted by Joe Swick, a fifth-generation Oregonian winemaker known for his minimalist approach. Sourced from organic vineyards across the region’s diverse sub-AVAs—such as Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, and Eola-Amity Hills—this Pinot Noir reflects the valley’s cool-climate terroir, with its volcanic and sedimentary soils. The 2022 vintage, for instance, typically blends fruit from multiple small, sustainably farmed sites, emphasizing freshness and site-specific character over heavy-handed winemaking.
The grapes undergo a mix of whole-cluster and destemmed fermentation with native yeasts, often in open-top vessels, lasting 10-20 days depending on the lot. This partial carbonic maceration keeps the fruit vibrant and the tannins soft. After pressing, the wine ages for about 10-12 months in neutral French oak barrels, avoiding new wood to let the Pinot’s purity shine. Unfined and unfiltered, with only a touch of sulfur at bottling, it clocks in around 12.5-13% ABV. The result is a translucent garnet pour with aromas of crushed raspberry, wild strawberry, and rose petals, laced with earthy mushroom and a hint of spice. On the palate, it’s light-bodied yet layered—juicy, tart, and mineral-driven, with silky tannins and a lingering finish.
Swick Pinot Noir is a versatile gem—chill it slightly (14-16°C) for solo sipping or pair it with salmon, duck, or mushroom risotto, it’s a love letter to Oregon’s Pinot legacy, reimagined through a natural wine lens.
