"The Flood" from Swick Wines is a vibrant and approachable skin-contact orange wine that captures the essence of the Pacific Northwest's unique terroir. Crafted by Oregon-native winemaker Joe Swick, this blend showcases a mix of organically farmed grape varieties, typically including Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, and Riesling, sourced from various vineyards across Oregon and Washington. The wine’s name pays homage to the ancient Missoula Floods that sculpted the Columbia Gorge and Willamette Valley millions of years ago, reflecting its deep connection to the region’s geological history.
Each grape variety is vinified separately, undergoing 30 days of skin contact to extract texture and flavor, then aged for six months in neutral French oak barrels before being blended. The result is an unfiltered, unfined wine with a minimal addition of SO2 at bottling, staying true to Swick’s minimal-intervention philosophy. On the nose, expect warm stone fruits and hints of tropical notes, while the palate delivers crisp acidity, light tannins, and a tangy, dry finish that leaves you reaching for another sip. Cloudy in appearance and bursting with juicy citrus, peach, and minerality, "The Flood" is a refreshing, aromatic wine that’s perfect chilled alongside salty snacks, seafood, or goat cheese. It’s a fun, lively expression of natural winemaking that balances experimentation with drinkability.
