The 2022 G.D. Vajra Dolcetto d’Alba is a vibrant, approachable red wine from the Piedmont region of Italy, crafted by the renowned Vajra family winery in Vergne, the highest village in the Barolo commune. Made from 100% Dolcetto grapes, this wine reflects the estate’s commitment to quality and tradition, sourced from select vineyards in Barolo and Novello, including older vines in Vergne and the west-facing Ravera vineyard at 340 meters elevation. These sites, with their optimal exposures and sustainable farming practices (organic since 1971), contribute to the wine’s freshness and expressive fruit character.
The 2022 vintage showcases a deep ruby-red color with purple hues, a signature of Dolcetto’s thick-skinned grapes. On the nose, it offers an inviting mix of floral notes like violets, alongside bright red and black fruit—think cherries, marasca cherries, and wild berries—with subtle hints of hay or fresh thyme adding a mountain-air freshness. The palate is soft and balanced, with gentle, approachable tannins, lively acidity, and a medium-to-light body that makes it incredibly drinkable. It finishes with a refined touch, sometimes revealing a slight almond-like bitterness typical of the variety.
Vinified in stainless steel to preserve its purity, the wine undergoes a 7–15-day fermentation after a manual harvest in early September, followed by bottling in the spring of 2023. Critics and enthusiasts praise its immediacy and pleasure-driven nature—Wine.com notes its “soft fruity flavors” and “catchy tannins,” ideal for casual sipping or pairing with antipasti, pasta with tomato sauce, pizza, or lighter meats. It’s a classic Piedmontese everyday wine, often enjoyed slightly chilled, embodying the “little sweet one” moniker (despite being dry) with its juicy, fruit-forward charm.
The Vajra family’s meticulous approach—high-altitude vineyards, natural grassing, and no irrigation—ensures this Dolcetto punches above its weight, offering finesse over power. At around 12.5–13% alcohol, it’s a versatile, food-friendly option that captures the essence of Piedmont’s unsung hero grape.
