The Veuve Fourny et Fils Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature Magnum 2023 is a stunning showcase of premier cru Chardonnay from the esteemed Côte des Blancs in Champagne, crafted by the fifth-generation brothers Charles-Henry and Emmanuel Fourny. Sourced from old-vine Chardonnay (averaging 40-45 years) grown in the chalky, limestone-rich soils of Vertus, this wine reflects the domaine’s meticulous, low-intervention ethos. Hand-harvested grapes undergo a gentle pressing, with only the first-press juice vinified—75% in stainless steel vats and 25% in seasoned oak barrels—followed by an extended aging on lees for at least 30 months. bottled without dosage, this Brut Nature exemplifies purity and precision, unadorned by added sugar, letting the terroir and fruit speak for themselves.
Poured from its impressive magnum format (1.5L), which enhances its aging potential and effervescence, the wine gleams pale gold with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is a refined interplay of crisp green apple, lemon zest, and grapefruit, layered with chalky minerality, hints of white flowers, and a faint brioche note from its lees aging. On the palate, it’s bone-dry and laser-focused, with a lively acidity driving a texture that’s both creamy and chiseled. Flavors of citrus and crunchy pear unfold alongside a saline freshness and a subtle nuttiness, culminating in a long, mineral-drenched finish. This is a Champagne of elegance and intensity, perfect as an aperitif or paired with oysters, shellfish, or a creamy risotto. Its magnum size makes it a celebratory centerpiece, promising even greater complexity with a few years of cellaring.
